Executive Summary

This worldwide, leading player in the construction materials industry has been facing significant challenges in their DevOps environments. These challenges have led to inefficiencies and roadblocks in their development processes. Having three DevOps environments all set up under disparate organizations, it was imperative to incorporate a solution that would result in a single shared repository ultimately building one working solution for this $17B organization.

The Challenge: Migration of Three DevOps Environments into One Working Solution

The company struggled using three separate DevOps environments to support locations across 30 states in the U.S., including manufacturing facilities producing building products, consumer products, packaging products and recycling products. These disparate environments have led to inefficiencies, reduced collaboration, and duplicated efforts. With no comprehensive view and no single shared code repository, the company cannot leverage code reusability. This current layout of the DevOps environments is counter-productive when tracking work and resources for cross-functional teams (BI, Integration, QA, ITMO, EDI). With independent DevOps environments, each managing different aspects of their software development and deployment process, a migration into one unified and efficient DevOps ecosystem was necessary.

The Solution: Analyzing Existing Environments and Migrating to One Working Solution

Combining three different DevOps environments into one cohesive and efficient solution requires careful planning, execution, and a structured approach. The client turned to Judge Consulting to plan and execute the migration of these systems, that included identifying any existing projects for migration, with all sprints, project boards, code repos, and team access to be moved into one consolidated environment. After conducting a detailed analysis of the existing DevOps environments in each organization, identifying their strengths, weaknesses, tools, processes, and resources, Judge determined two of these systems are to be considered sources while the third is deemed the destination. The implementation of the project included thousands of custom fields that needed manual mapping and rerouting to enable code sharing.

The Result: One Unified and Efficient Solution Leading to Faster Development and Increased Productivity

With a unified DevOps environment, teams within the company can collaborate more effectively, leading to improved efficiency and productivity. The result was faster development and deployment cycles, reducing time-to-market for products and services. The one consolidated working solution promotes code reusability, enabling the use of existing code, scripts, and automation techniques. By consolidating processes and implementing consistent security measures, the company can better adhere to compliance standards and protect its assets. As part of the migration, Judge provided comprehensive documentation and training resources making it easier for the client’s team to understand and use the new environment effectively.
